Pairing an Assistance Dog with a child can be a wonderful experience, but it takes a concerted approach to ensure success. Here are my pocket tips for placing Assistance Dogs with children:

• The Assistance Dog should be placed in a three way partnership with the child and his or her parent(s).
• The Assistance Dog and the child it serves should have the correct temperament fit between them.
• The Assistance Dog should be carefully socialized prior to placement to its child and his or her specific challenge.
• The Assistance Dog and the child it serves should be supervised closely for the duration of their time together.
